The Virginia men’s and women’s soccer teams went a combined 3-0-1 this weekend.
The men’s soccer team won both of its opening games, first topping Portland 3-0 in a Friday night match, then edging Washington 2-1 in an overtime game. The Cavaliers have a 2-0 record as they head into a Sept. 11 match against conference rival Duke in Klöckner Stadium. Sophomore midfielder Tony Tchani led Virginia during the weekend with two goals, both of which were against Portland.
For the women’s soccer team, however, the weekend proved to be one of mixed success. The Cavaliers traveled to Tempe, Ariz. and topped Arizona 4-1 Friday afternoon, but tied underdog Arizona State 1-1 Sunday. Virginia’s attack was a balanced one, as different athletes scored each of Virginia’s five goals this weekend.
The win and tie advanced the Cavaliers’ record to 3-1-1. Next on the schedule for the Virginia women’s soccer team is the Virginia Nike Classic, to be held in Klöckner Stadium Sept. 11 to 13, in which Virginia will take on West Virginia and Seton Hall.
