Below you will find answers to some common questions about our newspaper. If you have a question that is not answered here, you can contact editor@cavalierdaily.com to have your question directed to the appropriate person.

What is The Cavalier Daily?
The Cavalier Daily is an independent, student-run newspaper at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. Founded in 1890, the newspaper serves an audience of students, University faculty and staff, parents, alumni, Charlottesville residents and other readers.

What is your relationship with the University of Virginia?
The Cavalier Daily operates editorially and financially independent of the University, accruing its operations budget solely through advertising. The Cavalier Daily does pay to rent office space on the Grounds of the University of Virginia and has obtained permission to distribute the newspaper at various locations on the University’s Grounds.

What is your distribution?
We distribute 10,000 copies Mondays through Fridays on the Grounds of the University of Virginia and in the Charlottesville community during the fall and spring semesters, except during the weeks of final exams. We also distribute a mid-summer mail-home issue to all University of Virginia students. Click here for a map of distribution points around the Charlottesville community.

Can I have The Cavalier Daily delivered to my home?
Unfortunately The Cavalier Daily does not currently offer this service. If you do not live in the Charlottesville area, we encourage you to read the paper on our website, which is updated daily.

What kinds of content do you produce?
Our daily sections include News, Opinion, Sports, Nation & World and Comics, and weekly sections include Focus, Life, Health & Science, tableau (Arts & Entertainment) and Gameday. All content is produced solely by our student staff, with the exception of Nation & World content; the material for this page is obtained through a wire service contract.

The Cavalier Daily also publishes several special issues annually, including Gridiron, an overview of ACC football; Hoops, an overview of ACC basketball; a housing supplement for students seeking living arrangements for the upcoming school year; a fall semester move-in issue; and an election supplement featuring University election news and candidate profiles.

What are your advertising rates, and how can I place an ad?
Please visit our advertising department’s page for pricing information and details about how to purchase either a display or a classified advertisement.

How large is your staff?
The size of The Cavalier Daily’s staff is constantly in flux, as there is no formal process for joining most sections of the newspaper. However, the staff is usually about 200 students at any given time, about 40 of whom are elected to year-long editor positions.

How can I join The Cavalier Daily’s staff?
Any student at the University of Virginia is welcome to join the staff of The Cavalier Daily. Please visit our Join the CD Staff section for further information.

Are staff members paid?
