The age old debate of who's school is better is ridiculous. Each school has its strengths that sets it apart. Having friends at UVA I know for a fact that UVA students are not all bow-tie wearing cream puffs although I think a sad emphasis on status and the WASP style is definitely present. AND NO, Tech students are not rednecks. Just because a school is located in Southwest Virginia does not make it a redneck school. That whole thing is tired. Uva makes fun of Tech fans for being rednecks, Tech fans make fun of Uva fans for being uptight pussies. All of it is tired. As a Hokie fan , I WANT UVA TO DO WELL! The rivalry would be so much better and funner. I do think that Uva fans need to stop associating Tech fans' enthusiasm for their sports teams as insanity or "all we have" and just see it the way it is, we have more fun with it. It's a party, a celebration of our school and our sports teams. Not that UVA doesn't have spirit, just sometime ago it was lost onto something else. Sports don't brand your school, academics do. Tech has great academics, UVA does too, probably even better in some areas too (just like tech does). The whole debate is just tired. UVA fans just need to step up and seize the fun, and take notice that they have a beautiful stadium and a potentially great team that can make fall Saturday's the funnest days of the year. That is the only one-up Tech has on UVA , I see the rest as even. Just wish UVA would do better so the rivalry can be renewed and stop the bickering about rednecks, academics, preps, and the relevance of football. All of those arguments really have no backbone. UVA's greatest strengths are in what are called the "professional fields" (doctor, lawyer, MBAs) but there's really no field that it isn't very good at... including engineering and architecture. It is, after all, the creation of the nation's first great architect and engineer, Mr. Jefferson himself.As for those looking down their noses at Wall Street.. save the holier-than-thou protests for Soviet Russia. Without Wall Street, our economy wouldn't function (not to say that there shouldn't be something done about the ridiculous coin i-bankers bank in that oligopoly up there... but good luck doing anything about it). I've been to a VT/UVA game at UVA, when I was a freshman, and I have to say I was stunned at how rude some of the people were. I'm not talking about jibes from random passers-by, but how the friends of the person I was staying with treated me. I have never been treated with such disdain and ill-will in my life.Now, don't get me wrong - not everyone was mean, but I think it would do good for all of us to remember that rivalries have their place, and while it's fun to trade jibes with one another, I think it's also good to acknowledge that each school has its strengths - Tech is a powerhouse engineering and architecture school, and UVA excels at liberal arts.
