Bowling Green is currently building two school building that will be completely off the grid or net-zero. These buildings are state of the art, but really don't cost any more than traditional construction. The administrators there focused on hyper energy efficient technologies and looked at ways to incorporate different technologies to work in harmony with one another to achieve this benchmark. Having spoken with some of the design professionals, they are confident that they can achieve this over and over again. In addition to being net zero, the buildings are also hurricane proof, tornado proof, and meet 9/11 military specs (this I know). This article explains exactly what happened there:http://www.greenrightnow.com/wabc/2009/06/22/schools-go-net-zero-in-kentucky-and-win-national-award/Please feel free to let me know if you would like additional information. Thanks

As an alumni and local Charlottesville resident that works in the energy efficiency industry, I would encourage the officals at the University to take a look at the new building technologies being incorporated in Bowling Green, KY.
