With its unblemished dual meet record on the line against conference rivals Duke and then-No. 15 North Carolina this weekend, the No. 11 Virginia women’s swim and dive team demonstrated why the Cavaliers are the ACC’s team to beat with the conference championship less than a month away.

Virginia (6-0, 3-0 ACC) defeated the Blue Devils (2-5, 0-5 ACC) Friday, 154-131, before dismantling a strong Tar Heel squad (5-2, 4-1 ACC) 170-130 Saturday.

The No. 12 Cavalier men (3-3, 2-1 ACC) found the going tougher against No. 16 North Carolina (6-1, 5-0 ACC), and earned a split on the road trip. The men toppled Duke (3-4, 1-4 ACC) 155-140, but then fell 166-134 against the Tar Heels.

Sophomores Jan Daniec and Taylor Grey paced the Cavalier men’s team Saturday with a pair of victories each in the distance freestyle and breaststroke events, respectively.

The women overcame a poor start against the Tar Heels which included a disqualification in the opening event, the 200 medley relay. They eventually took the lead just before the first diving break and never looked back.

Junior Lauren Perdue highlighted the swimming performances with victories in two individual events, the 50 and 100 freestyle. Freshman diver Laura Gartrell posted a second-place finish in the one-meter diving competition and qualified for the NCAA Zone Championships in the process.
