No. 2 Virginia remain unbeaten this season after notching its first conference win of the year by clobbering No. 41 host Maryland 6-1 yesterday.
The Cavaliers (5-0, 1-0 ACC) again thrived on both the singles and doubles courts. In doubles, junior Jarmere Jenkins and senior Drew Courtney clinched the doubles point in their closest match of the year, a 9-8 nailbiter against No. 36 tandem senior Maros Horny and junior John Collins of Maryland (1-4, 0-1 ACC) on the first court. The duo of sophomore Alex Domijan and senior Steven Eelkman Rooda beat Terrapins’ junior Tommy Laine and sophomore Jan Surovic 8-3 to clinch Virginia’s other doubles win.
Jenkins and No. 57 sophomore Justin Shane’s performances highlighted the squad’s singles performance. Both Jenkins and Shane protected their unblemished records with straight-set wins against Maryland’s Horny and junior Andy Magee, respectively, with Domijan also impressing in a 6-0, 6-0 win against junior Sergio Wyss.
The Cavaliers return to action the weekend of Feb. 17-19 for the ITA Team Indoor National Championships at the Boar’s Head Sports Complex. The team has won the tournament for the last four years.
