Cavs survive Tech test, 61-59

By on February 23, 2012

The No. 25 Virginia men’s basketball team survived a frantic finish filled with miscues by both players and officials to snatch a 61-59 victory against Virginia Tech yesterday evening in Blacksburg.

With three minutes seven seconds left, junior guard Jontel Evans banked in a Hail Mary three-pointer — seemingly after the shot clock expired — to give the Cavaliers (21-6, 8-5 ACC) a 59-51 advantage.

Consecutive scores by Evans and senior guard Sammy Zeglinski with 7:32  left to play gave Virginia a 53-49 lead, its first in more than 20 minutes.

Evans and Zeglinski scored 13 each but both fouled out during the game’s final two and a half minutes to force freshman guard Malcolm Brogdon into ball-carrying duty. It was the first time a Virginia player has fouled out this season.

Senior forward Mike Scott piled up a game-high 20 points and nine rebounds, but the officiating crew arguably made the biggest difference in Virginia’s successful effort to split the season series with Virginia Tech (15-13, 8-9 ACC).

The referees on the court and manning the game clock made several suspect calls against both teams, none bigger than allowing Evans’ banked trey to stand in a game the Cavaliers ultimately won by just two points.

Virginia shot 59.5 percent from the floor but paved the way for potential late Hokie heroics by missing the front ends of three one-and-ones during the final 36 seconds.

Freshman guard Paul Jesperson added seven points during 28 minutes off the bench — both career highs — while junior guard Erick Green paced Virginia Tech with 19 points.
