Showing appreciation

During students' annual Employee Appreciation Week, April 19-23, Facilities Management employees enjoyed receiving very creative hand-made thank-you notes Monday, surprise goodie-bags Wednesday and pizza lunches later in the week. Wednesday evening, the Building Services staff for Health System facilities were served pizza by a grateful group of undergraduates and, Friday afternoon, another group of students brought pizza for over 100 employees who enjoyed the lunch while talking with the visiting students, sharing University stories and talking about their work and experiences.

At the pizza parties, second-year Sociology major Lindsey Aaron, organizer for the Employee Appreciation events, read a letter from the University's 21 Society: "The 21 Society thanks you for your kindness, your hard work, and your immense contributions which have made our home here such a wonderful place ... You are the familiar, happy faces that we can count on seeing day after day, even when the rest of our world seems to have turned upside down ... Though this week has earned the title of Employee Appreciation Week, you can trust that there are tens of thousands of Employee Appreciation moments that occur every week here at the University. If we could throw you a party for each one of them, we would, but that much pizza is not easy to come by." We enjoyed that letter so much that we framed the original and sent copies to our shops throughout Grounds.

The thank-you cards, written and designed specifically for individual departments, included such greetings as "Landscaping staff - The Grounds are beautiful, and without them I probably would not have fallen in love with UVA. For that reason, you have all actually changed my life. Thank you for devoting your time to make the world more beautiful!" and "Facilities Management - Thank you for everything you do! Having you here makes ALL the difference!" and, "Dear Recycling Staff - Thank you so much for all of your efforts to make recycling a reality here at UVA!" Everyone enjoyed those cards; your artwork and sincere notes made them very special to us.

We also want to thank the other student groups who supported the week's events, including APO Service Fraternity, Student Council, Catholic Student Ministries, Workers and Students United, Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship and Intervarsity Christian Fellowship.

Facilities Management employees were truly touched by your generous and enthusiastic participation in Employee Appreciation Week. Thank you for all that you did! We enjoyed meeting and talking with you, and we appreciate you!
