Cavs sweep competition
Two weeks away from the ACC Championship meet, the Virginia men's and women's cross country teams built momentum with a sweep of the Panorama Farms Invitational Friday at their notoriously hilly home course. The men placed first out of 10 schools with 39 total points, while the women topped eight other teams with a dominant team score of 27.
For the second consecutive meet, the Virginia women displayed their impressive depth with a tight 30-second spread. The Cavaliers were led on the women's side by third- and fourth-place finishes from junior Barbara Strehler and sophomore Chelsea Ley, respectively. Strehler and Ley completed the six-kilometer course in 21:17 - 14 seconds off the pace of UNC Greensboro redshirt senior Ashley Schnell, who claimed the individual title. Schnell led UNC Greensboro to a runner-up finish with 55 points.
Meanwhile, senior Anna Corrigan came in sixth, senior Chelsea France finished eighth and sophomore Katherine Walker rounded out the scoring five in 11th.
In the men's eight-kilometer race, UNC Greensboro captured the individual title again when sophomore Paul Chelimo stopped the clock at 23:36 - 42 seconds ahead of the next finisher. Virginia senior Mark Amirault and sophomore Chris Foley were second and third, respectively, after the Cavaliers ran the early portion of the race together in a pack.
Sophomore Drew Paisley came to the line in ninth place, ahead of junior teammate Robby Andrews' 11th-place finish and sophomore David Cotton's 14th-place performance.
