Matmen shine in tourney

A week after opening the season by winning duals against Campbell and Anderson, the Virginia wrestling team placed 12 of 19 wrestlers in the top four of their respective weight classes at this weekend's Wolfpack Open. Overall, the Cavaliers claimed half of the individual titles handed out at the tournament.

Redshirt junior Matt Snyder, who did not take the mat last weekend, led the charge by winning all four of his matches in his 2011 debut to claim a first-place finish in the 125-pound division.

Redshirt senior Nick Nelson, redshirt junior Jedd Moore, redshirt freshman Nick Sulzer and redshirt sophomore Jon Fausey also collected first-place honors at the tournament. All five first-place finishers kept their undefeated records in tact throughout the weekend.

Freshman Joseph Martinez and senior Derek Valenti, meanwhile, finished in second place in their weight classes in their first season appearances for the Cavaliers.

With one tournament under their belt, the Virginia matmen will travel to Ithaca, N.Y., next weekend to compete in the Cornell Body Bar Invitational.
