Virginia cruises to victory, 66-40

Senior guard Ariana Moorer continued her inspired play, leading the Virginia women's basketball team to a 66-40 win against Virginia Tech yesterday in Blacksburg, the Cavaliers' 11th straight win against their in-state rivals.

Moorer paced Virginia (19-9, 7-7 ACC) with 17 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for her seventh straight game with double-digit points. She also set a program record by making all 13 of her free throw attempts as Virginia went 24-of-25 from the line.

The Hokies (7-20, 3-11 ACC) led 12-9 after the first six minutes before the Virginia defense clamped down. Virginia Tech made just a pair of free throws in the next 13 minutes as the Cavaliers took control with a 21-2 run.

The Hokies shot 13-of-53 from the field on the afternoon and Virginia never looked back after taking a 30-16 lead into the start of the second half.

Sophomore guard Ataira Franklin was 3-of-6 from beyond the arc, scoring 11 points and grabbing two rebounds. The Cavaliers out-rebounded the Hokies 39-29 to avenge a disappointing effort against No. 8 Maryland Thursday when they were dominated on the glass 53-26 during the 17-point loss.

Senior forward Chelsea Shine scored five points on 2-of-7 shooting, leaving her with 999 career points.

Shine has a chance to reach the 1,000-point milestone in the Cavaliers' final home game of the season Friday against Wake Forest.
