Weekend Previews: August 30-September 1
What: Virginia (0-0) vs. Brigham Young (0-0)
Where: Scott Stadium
When: 3:30 p.m.
The skinny: Sophomore David Watford takes over at starting quarterback for the Cavaliers, and he will be tested from the opening snap against Brigham Young. The Cougars were bruising on defense last year, allowing just 266.1 yards and 14.0 points per game, both ranked third in the nation. Senior linebacker Kyle Van Noy had 13 sacks and two interceptions last year and is a Pre-Season All-American. For a Virginia offensive line with some questions, preventing Van Noy from terrorizing Watford’s debut will be a key concern.
Brigham Young debuts a new starting quarterback of its own in Taysom Hill. The sophomore played in six games and started twice last year, throwing for 425 yards and rushing for 336. He will rely on his scrambling and on senior receiver Cody Hoffman, who was twelfth in the nation last year in receiving yards and should provide matchup difficulties for Jon Tenuta’s aggressive defense.

What: No. 25 Virginia (0-0) vs. Louisville (0-0)
Where: Klöckner Stadium
When: 8 p.m.
The skinny: Friday night at Klöckner Stadium, the No. 25 Virginia men’s soccer team will take the field against No. 10 Louisville in the season-opener for both teams. For the Cavaliers, the game marks a pivotal moment in the team’s identity, as the lineup will not include forward Will Bates for the first time in four years. The seventh-leading scorer in Virginia history first found the back of the net in September of 2009 and finished his stellar career with 45 tallies. In his absence, the Cavaliers will seek offensive production from players with room to develop, like sophomore forward Darius Madison. In the 90-plus minutes against Louisville—winners of the Big East last year and members of the American Athletic Conference this season before they join the ACC—young stars may need to rise to new heights.

What: Jefferson Cup matches vs. Marshall, James Madison, Montana
Where: Memorial Gym
When: Friday, 7 p.m. (Marshall); Saturday, noon (JMU); Saturday, 7 p.m. (Montana)
The skinny: The Virginia volleyball team opens its regular season this weekend hosting matches against Marshall, James Madison and Montana as part of the Jefferson Cup.
Seven Cavaliers — six freshmen and one sophomore transfer — will be playing for the first time in Memorial Gym. In addition, junior middle Mallory Woolridge will be playing her first match since 2011 after missing the entire 2012 season with a shoulder injury.
Last season saw Virginia finish at the bottom of the conference with a 9-22 record (3-17 ACC), in part because of a depleted roster. The new players add greatly needed depth to the team, bringing the number of usable players from 12 up to 18 and contributing to the team’s positive outlook for the season.
