University Bookstore opens in-store pharmacy
The University Bookstore and the Medical Center recently coordinated to launch the University Bookstore Pharmacy, a fully functioning pharmacy that fills prescription and provides medication counseling.
The pharmacy will serve students, employees and visitors to Grounds. Two staff members — one pharmacist and one medical technician — will be on duty at the counter.
This is the fifth pharmacy at the University and the closest one to central Grounds. The other four include U.Va. Barringer Pharmacy on Jefferson Park Avenue, the UTeamTM Connection Window south of the Medical Center, the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center Pharmacy at the University Hospital and the Student Health Pharmacy on Brandon Avenue.
The four other pharmacies at the University are “not convenient for people who live on the academic side of the University,” said Jonathan Kates, the executive director of Bookstore.
Pharmacy Services administrator Rafael Saenz said plans for the Bookstore Pharmacy have been in the works for a long time. “We have been thinking for a very long time but there hasn’t been much space opening up,” he said.
The removal of the Bookstore post office after completion of the recent Newcomb Hall renovation project made room for the location.
While the other four pharmacies provide very limited parking, the University Bookstore is located right next to the Central Grounds Garage, which would typically offer pharmacy visitors free parking.
“We always offer one hour of free parking with $5 of store purchases, and most prescriptions are going to be more than $5,” Kates said. “This will be an added convenience for folks who have to drive here.”
The pharmacy is located in the back of the first floor of the Bookstore next to the copy services. It operates from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
