Swimming splits NC State meet

No. 9 women continue to roll, No. 20 ranked men drop second straight

After an emotional meet last weekend against rival North Carolina, the Virginia swim and dive teams had mixed results Saturday against North Carolina State. The No. 9 Virginia women’s team defeated the Wolfpack, 178.5-115.5, while the No. 20 Virginia men’s team fell to No. 21 NC State, 157-141.

The Cavalier women are now 10-1 in dual meets on the season, with their only loss coming against No. 6 Texas. The men dropped to 5-5 on the season in dual meets.

The Cavalier women won 10 of their 16 events, with three swimmers winning multiple events. Freshman Leah Smith once again paced the field in the distance freestyle events, winning the 500 and 1,000-yard freestyle. Similarly, sophomore Courtney Bartholomew continued to dominate backstroke, winning both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke. Junior Shaun Casey was the third Cavalier to win multiple events, victorious in the 400-yard individual medley and the 200-yard butterfly.

Virginia also won both of the women’s diving events, with sophomore Becca Corbett winning the one-meter dive and sophomore Katie Warburg winning the three-meter dive. Virginia’s other event winners were freshman Laura Simon in the 200-yard breaststroke and senior Rachel Naurath in the 200-yard freestyle.

The men earned victories in just six of their 16 events. Senior Brad Phillips, like Smith, showed off his prowess in the distance events, winning the 500 and 1,000-yard freestyles. Unsurprisingly, junior JB Kolod won both the one-meter and three-meter diving events. Sophomores Luke Papendick and Yannick Kaeser scored Virginia’s other event wins, in the 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard breaststroke, respectively.

The Cavaliers return to action next weekend in a home meet against Pittsburgh, a new ACC foe. It will be Virginia’s first home meet in the Aquatic and Fitness Center since the quad-meet Nov. 8-9. Virginia’s seniors will be honored in the break between the diving and the swimming events.
