Softball continues skip, falls to 2-14

NC State sweeps Cavaliers in conference opener

Virginia softball was swept by NC State this weekend to start conference play as the Cavaliers (2-14, 0-3 ACC) could not get the hits needed to win two close games.

Virginia managed only five hits in the first game, a 3-0 defeat. Junior Renada Davis put the Wolfpack (8-6, 3-0 ACC) on the board with a lead-off home run in the first. Davis would also drive in the game’s final run with an RBI single in the sixth. Freshman shortstop Lindsay Mayer recorded two of the Cavaliers’ five hits.

Mayer took to the circle in game two for her first collegiate start, where she went the full seven and gave up five runs — four earned. Junior pitcher Emily Weiman was dominant for NC State as she carried a perfect game into the last frame.

Though Virginia freshman outfielder Iyana Hughes led off the seventh with a single, and she and freshman second baseman Madison Labshere both scored on a single by senior outfielder Stephanie Harris, the Cavaliers still fell 5-2.

Virginia put up little resistance in the series finale, where the Wolfpack trampled the Cavaliers to a 9-1 victory in five innings. Virginia’s sole run came from the bat of freshman catcher Katie Park, with her first career home run. NC State exploded in the third inning, scoring six runs and ultimately using back-to-back homers in the fifth inning to officially end the game. Sophomore pitcher Aimee Chapdelaine was tagged with six runs — two earned — as well as the loss in three innings of work. Her record now sits at 2-12.

The Cavaliers will welcome Florida State to Charlottesville next weekend for their home opener.
