Dr. Nancy Dunlap announced Wednesday she plans to step down as dean of the Medical School in November. The University has appointed a search committee, led by Dr. Richard Shannon, executive vice president for health affairs, and John Simon, executive vice president and provost.

Dunlap has served as Dean of the Medical School since August 2013, when she was hired for an 18-month contract.

Dunlap also serves as the Medical School’s chief clinical officer — providing advice and counsel to department directors and clinical staff — as well as a professor of pulmonary and critical care medicine.

Before joining the University, Dunlap worked in Washington, D.C. as a physician-in-residence for the National Governor’s Association. She also served as a health policy fellow for the Committee on Energy and Commerce in the House of Representatives.

Dunlap could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Dunlap holds a bachelor’s in biology from Wellesley College, an M.D. from the Duke University School of Medicine, a doctorate in microbiology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and an M.B.A. from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan.

Swensen said the Medical School’s three goals are high-quality patient care, educating the next generation of healthcare leaders and engaging in research for the betterment of the human condition. To this end, Swensen said Dunlap made developing the academic strategic planning process a priority.

“People from across the entire School of Medicine, whether it be doctors or staff, are looking at ways to achieve excellence in research, education, and patient care,” he said. “We are looking at how we can move forward and enhance the execution of those three missions.”

With Dunlap’s announcement, the process for filling the position is already taking shape.

“The School of Medicine’s goal is to identify a nationally recognized leader,” Medical School spokesperson Eric Swensen said. “We will consider any candidate whether here or at another institution who meets that goal.”

The search committee will also include co-chairs Karen Johnston, chair of the University department of neurology, and Gary Owens, director of the Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center.

The committee hopes to fill the position by late 2014.

Correction: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that Dr. Dunlap hired Dr. Shannon. Dr. Dunlap currently reports to Dr. Shannon for clinical operations, and did serve as Dean of the Medical School during Dr. Shannon’s hiring process.
