No. 3 field hockey splits weekend

Virginia defeats Richmond, but falls to Wake Forest

This weekend, the No. 3 Virginia Cavaliers (11-4, 4-1 ACC) faced off against Richmond (8-6) and No. 17 Wake Forest (9-5, 2-2 ACC).

The Cavaliers traveled to Richmond Friday to play the Spiders. Though the first half went scoreless, the Cavalier offense still managed to dominate with four penalty corners and four additional shots on the goal.

The Virginia defense put up a strong showing, allowing only one shot on the goal. Things sped up in the second half, though, with the first score coming eight minutes into the half off of a penalty corner by Richmond’s junior back Amy Cooke.

Seven minutes after Cooke’s goal, freshman midfielder Tara Vittese answered Richmond with a penalty corner score of her own. Sophomore midfielder Katie Kelly and freshman midfielder Nadine de Koning assisted on the tally. Vittese took it to the circle 15 minutes later and fired from the low right side to seal Virginia’s victory 2-1 against the Spiders — her 12th goal of the season.

Sunday, the Cavaliers returned home to University Turf Field to face off against ACC opponent No. 17 Wake Forest. Virginia led early with a goal six minutes in when sophomore striker Caleigh Foust put home her 11th goal of the season off an assist from sophomore midfielder/striker Emilia Tapsall.

The Demon Deacons answered when senior midfielder Christine Conroe scored consecutive goals at the 13 and 28 minute marks to end the half 2-1.

The second half did not prove any easier for the Cavaliers, with senior back/midfielder Anna Kozniuk scoring 10 minutes into the half to bring the Deacons’ lead up to 3-1.

Three minutes later, Vittese answered Wake Forest’s three consecutive goals and brought the Cavaliers within one point with a score off of a penalty stroke. Koznuik came back 10 minutes later and scored again, this time off of a penalty corner from Conroe, pushing Wake Forest’s lead to 4-2.

Senior back Maddie Decerbo narrowed the lead to one three minutes later with her second goal of the year. However, the Cavaliers were not able to rally in the final seven minutes, falling 4-3. It was Virginia’s first conference loss of the year.
