Serving the University Community Since 1890

The end of the road

The Managing Board reflects on the past year as its term comes to an end

We came into this term with a set of goals for the year ahead. As the term comes to a close, it would be customary to use this time and this space to reflect on how well we achieved those goals.

But the logistical plans we set out with have been overshadowed by the disquieting events that we and the rest of the community had to confront. We found ourselves with a heavy burden resting on our shoulders. We could no longer compartmentalize our work by confining it to the bounds of the academic semester. The news and the emotions invaded our personal spaces — and yours.

Here is where we were able to better understand the place and the poignancy of student journalism. We grieved as you did for the disruption of the sanctity of this community. But the way we confronted our grief was to work to give everyone in the student body what they needed — answers, guidance, perspectives. We are committed to bringing you objective and balanced news coverage, just as any other newspaper, but our stories are crafted with an understanding of the gravity of the community’s disturbance which no other news outlet could have.

As students, we now sense the University community is ready to move on from the most recent tragedy that has befallen it. We share in that readiness, as we are anxious to find a sense of stability, especially as our year of service comes to an end. But we also recognize that there is still much change to come, and we trust our successors to report on and comment on those changes, keeping the perspective oriented forward, not fixated on the past.

We have done our best to fulfill our responsibilities as your newspaper — to be your resource when you need us. As we hand over our responsibilities to our new leaders, we remain optimistic about the potential for healing in this community. If ever you need a clearer picture of what that healing and recovery process looks like, The Cavalier Daily will still be here — on the stands, in your inboxes and on your Twitter feeds. If you too are looking for stability, we hope you can find it here.
