The Virginia women’s tennis team downed Notre Dame by a 6-1 final score Sunday at Eck Tennis Pavilion in Notre Dame, Indiana. The No. 5 Cavaliers (9-2, 3-0 ACC) swept the singles after dropping the doubles point, extending their winning streak to four matches.
No. 26 Notre Dame (7-4, 3-1 ACC) gained the advantage in doubles when junior Julie Vrabel and freshman Allison Miller took down No. 23 junior Skylar Morton and freshman Cassie Mercer by an 8-3 margin on court two.
Cavalier juniors Julia Elbaba and Maci Epstein defeated sophomores Mary Closs and Jane Fennelly by the same score on court three, but the Fighting Irish captured the doubles point when No. 21 junior Quinn Gleason and sophomore Monica Robinson prevailed 8-5 against juniors Danielle Collins and Stephanie Nauta on court one.
Down a point, Virginia turned the tables, registering wins on every singles court, with four of the victories coming in straight sets. Elbaba — the nation’s top-ranked singles player — flew past Robinson with a 6-2, 6-2 win on court two, while No. 27 Nauta took out Vrabel by a 6-3, 6-4 margin on court three.
Mercer kept the ball rolling with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-0) win against Fennelly on court six before Morton sealed the Cavalier win with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 victory on court four. No. 32 Collins edged Gleason in a super tiebreak on court one, while Epstein rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) win against Miller on court five.
Virginia hosts Florida State and George Washington Sunday at Snyder Tennis Center in its first outdoor home matches of the season. The Cavaliers play the Seminoles at 11 a.m. and the Colonials at 4 p.m.
