The Virginia men’s golf team picked up two individual wins at the DICK’S Sporting Goods Collegiate Challenge Cup and a second-place team finish this past weekend in Nashville, Tenn., helping the ACC claim the title at the tournament over the SEC for the second consecutive year.
The tournament is structured as a conference competition among 12 teams, six from each conference. Freshman Thomas Walsh and senior Nick McLaughlin picked up victories for the Cavaliers in their individual matches. The two victories proved crucial in the final results of the conference competition, as the ACC took home the title with 15.5 points, compared to the SEC’s 14.5. The remaining scores included Duke over Kentucky and Louisville over Alabama by 3 to 2 scores, Florida State over Georgia 3-1-1, Tennessee over Clemson 3 to 2 and Florida over Georgia Tech 2-1-2.
Virginia started the weekend off strong, finishing first place after posting a 7-under 561 in the first two rounds Friday. It followed that performance Saturday with a 4-over 288, leaving them tied with Vanderbilt for first place in the team competition with an aggregate 3-under 849. Ultimately, The Cavaliers lost out to Vanderbilt in a one-hole play playoff following Saturday’s final team to determine the tournament champion.
The standings from the two rounds Friday and lone round Saturday determined the matchups for the 18-hole match play on Sunday, with each team taking on the corresponding standing in the other conference. Virginia also dropped the 18-hole round Sunday to the Commodores, 3 to 2.
Virginia’s next competition takes place Oct. 9 – 11 at the Bank of the Tennessee Intercollegiate hosted in Johnson City, Tenn.
