The Virginia men’s golf team finished fourth at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate while the women’s team took ninth at the Tar Heel Invitational this weekend.

For the men, an even-par 864 over the three-day tournament secured their third consecutive top-five showing, dating back to the first tournament of the fall season. Virginia finished behind Penn State (-20), Louisville (-8) and Tennessee (-3), respectively. Sophomore Danny Walker led the way for the Cavaliers individually with a 5-under 211, good for fourth overall and just two shots behind freshman Adrian Meronk of host East Tennessee State, who won individual honors with a 7-under 209 weekend score. Junior Derek Bard finished 12th at 3-under 213.

The Bank of Tennessee acted as a warmup for the Cavaliers in preparation for this weekend’s U.S. Collegiate tournament, which will host 17 teams at the Golf Club of Georgia, 16 of which are currently ranked in the top 50 in Golfweek’s latest poll.

The women also came into the weekend having secured top-five finishes in their first two tournaments. However, they fell well outside of that threshold in Chapel Hill, finishing with a 34-over 898 — 32 strokes behind Duke, who won the tournament for the second straight season. A ninth place finish was the Cavaliers worst regular season showing since March of 2014 at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, where the team finished 13th.

Of the 18 teams competing, Virginia was only able to field 2 scores in the top 30 individual rounds, with senior Elizabeth Szokol leading the way with an 18th-place finish at 6-over 222. The Tar Heel Invitational is the second time this season Szokol has posted the low score for the Cavaliers. Freshman Morgan Gonzales finished second for Virginia and 29th overall at 8-over 224.

The men’s team travels to Alpharetta, Ga. for the U.S Collegiate Friday while the women have the weekend off before wrapping up their fall season Oct. 23-25 at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C.
