Cavaliers fall short in ITA Nationals

Despite fielding the top seed in both the men’s and women’s singles brackets, both Virginia women’s and men’s tennis came up empty-handed in the ITA/USTA National Indoors this past weekend in Flushing, New York, as none of the six Cavalier qualifiers of the prestigious tournament made it past their quarterfinal matches in the men’s or women’s draws against the stacked field of national opponents.

On the men’s side, top-seeded junior Thai-Son Kwiatkowski easily claimed his first and second round matches over opponents from Florida State, 6-2 and 6-4, and Northwestern, 6-3 and 6-4, respectively, before falling victim to Joao Monteiro of Virginia Tech 2-6, 5-7, in the quarterfinals of the singles draw.

On the doubles side, Kwiatkowski was joined by senior Mac Styslinger as the top-ranked team in the draw, but they were booted in a tiebreak in their first round of play by Dojas/Soa of Texas Tech, 6-7, 4-6.

For the women, Virginia fielded two qualifiers in the singles draw, seniors Danielle Collins and Julia Elbaba, who were joined in the doubles draw by senior Skylar Morton and freshman Meghan Kelley.

Collins, although entering as the top seed of the 32-person singles bracket, was upset by Katarina Adamovic of Oklahoma State in her first round of play, falling in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 2-6. Elbaba, the sixth seed, fared much better than Collins, advancing to the quarterfinals before ultimately falling to Francesca Di Lorenzo of Ohio State in straight sets, 0-6, 6-4, 3-6.

Roles were reversed in doubles play, as Collins was able to advance to the quarterfinals in the doubles draw while Elbaba lost in her first match. The team of Elbaba/Morton dropped their first round of play after a first-round bye, losing to Florida’s Josie Kuhlman/Belinda Woolcock in a third-set tiebreak, 2-6, 7-6(5), 0-1(4). Collins and Kelley, also granted a first-round bye, took their second round match from Fabikova/Hauger of California, 5&1, before suffering defeat in a tiebreak at the hands of fourth-seeded Carter/Kay of UNC in the quarterfinals, 1-6, 6-4, 0-1(6).

The ITA/USTA National Indoors wrapped up the fall collegiate season for Cavaliers competitors. The women’s team will not take the courts until Jan. 17 of next year when they matchup against Boston College in Boston, while the men will not compete until the ITA National Team Indoor Championships hosted by Virginia in mid-February.
