The annual race is open to all students and community members who wish to participate.

University students participated in the 24th annual Fourth Year 5K race Saturday to promote safe drinking habits on the day of the last home football game of the season.

The run began in the Amphitheater, where over 1,400 runners lined up at 8 a.m. to begin the 3.1-mile race around Grounds.

Although the run was open to all ages, the majority of participants were fourth year students looking to cross the box marked “4th Year 5K” off of their list of “116 Things to Do Before You Graduate.”

Celia Jeffords, a fourth-year College student, said she and her roommates thought class bonding was the perfect way to start the day.

“Even though you can run it as an underclassman, it's really special for the fourth years because it is put on for us and it is one of our last opportunities to do something all together,” Jeffords said.

In addition to class bonding, the race also promotes healthy drinking habits. Proceeds from the race go to the Leslie Baltz Foundation, which is a scholarship for students pursuing the arts, said Whitney Perlen, fourth-year College student and Peer Health Educator.

Leslie Baltz was a fourth year student who passed away in 1997 after sustaining an alcohol related injury on the day of the last home game.
