Senior Ryan Shane was dominant over the weekend, grabbing victories in both his doubles and singles matches.

In a tuneup game before the ITA National Indoor Championship, the No. 1 Virginia Men’s Tennis team hosted and defeated No. 9 UCLA 6-1 Tuesday night at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Center in Charlottesville.

With the win, the Cavaliers move to 5-0 and the Bruins fall to 5-1, as Virginia passed its first real test of the season with flying colors.

The Cavaliers won the doubles point by taking two out of the three matches with the teams of Ryan Shane/Luca Corinteli and Mac Styslinger/Thai-Son Kwiatkowski both getting big wins.

When it came to singles, the Cavaliers looked very strong as they won five games in straight sets with strong performances at the top of the ladder, as Virginia senior Ryan Shane defeated junior Mackenzie McDonald 6-3, 7-6, and Cavalier junior Thai-Son Kwiatkowski defeating junior Gage Brymer 6-3, 6-3.

The only singles loss on the day for Virginia was a hard-fought three set match in which senior Karue Sell defeated senior Mac Styslinger 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

As a whole, the Cavaliers should be pleased with their performance, but should also have their sights set on the greater goal of capturing the ITA National Indoor Championship on their home court.

This four-day event is scheduled to take place Feb. 12-15, and features the top 16 teams in the country. As the No. 1 seed, the Cavaliers will begin the tournament against No. 16 San Diego Friday at 6:30 p.m.

The Cavaliers hope to make a deep run in this tournament, and, as favorites, capture their first championship of the year.
