Led by 21 points from senior guard Malcolm Brogdon, ninth-ranked Virginia downed Pittsburgh, 64-50, Saturday afternoon.
Brogdon’s 21 were a game-high and came on an efficient 6-of-9 shooting performance. The Greater Atlanta Christian alum also poured in three of his five attempts from behind the arc. As a team, the Cavaliers (19-4, 8-3 ACC) shot 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from deep.
Virginia’s defensive revival continued on Saturday. The Panthers (17-5, 5-4 ACC) shot only 39.1 percent from the field, including a woeful 2-of-13 from deep. Junior forward Jamel Artis led Pittsburgh with 17 points, four rebounds and three assists on 7-of-11 shooting.
The Cavaliers were successful despite minimal contributions from senior forward Anthony Gill, who was limited to only four points and three rebounds.
Sophomore forward Isaiah Wilkins showcased his versatility by filling the stat sheet with four points, seven rebounds and five assists while also recording one steal.
Virginia carried a 29-27 advantage into the half, but Pittsburgh tied the game before the Cavaliers unleashed a 12-0 run, which included three-straight threes.
Following the run, Virginia’s lead never dipped below nine-points.
The Cavaliers return to action Tuesday night against Virginia Tech.
