Kaeser, Fong lead Virginia to 28th-place finish at the NCAA Championships

In his final meet for Virginia, senior Yannick Kaeser placed seventh in the 200-yard breaststroke to earn individual first-team All-America honors.

After competing in three events each, senior Yannick Kaeser and freshman Zach Fong, the sole representatives of the Virginia men’s swimming and diving team, wrapped up the NCAA Championships in Atlanta, Ga. Saturday.

On the second day of action, Fong and Kaeser finished 46th and 51st in the 200-yard individual medley, respectively. On the following day, Fong placed 37th in the 100-yard butterfly — good for fourth on the program’s all-time list. Meanwhile, Kaeser finished 14th in the 100-yard breaststroke, earning him an honorable mention All-America honors.

On the last day of competition, the Cavaliers put up their best respective performances. In the 200-yard butterfly, Fong placed 26th with a time of 1:44.20. For Kaeser, by placing seventh in the 200-yard breaststroke, he earned individual first-team All-America honors.

The Cavaliers finished the meet in a tie for 28th place.

This meet represents the end of Kaeser’s career at Virginia. Going forward, he will compete in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at the 2016 Summer Olympics for his homeland of Switzerland.
