The Cavaliers were knocked out of the NCAA Tournament Sunday, falling to No. 5 Georgetown by a score of 2-0.
Despite outshooting the Hoyas (19-2-3) 9-to-3, the No. 15 Cavaliers (15-5-2) were unable to find a breakthrough and Georgetown capitalized on their limited opportunities on the field.
The weather was a major factor in the game as the intense winds made it difficult for both teams to establish an offensive rhythm.
At the half, the match was scoreless with Virginia having taken the only two shots of the game. A few minutes after the half, the Hoyas found their breakthrough.
In the 47th minute, the Cavaliers suffered an own-goal, as Georgetown played a ball into the box and a Virginia clearance attempt was deflected past senior goalkeeper Morgan Stearns and into the net.
Georgetown doubled its lead in the 77th minute off of a 20-yard free kick that found its way into the back of the Virginia goal.
The Cavaliers controlled most of the game and give up two goals against the run of play. Georgetown capitalized on the opportunities Virginia missed, and won the game.
In the end, Virginia finished with 15 wins and improved as the season progressed. Losing in this fashion, after outplaying a higher ranked team, will make the Cavaliers consider what could have been. However, the team can still hold their heads high after bowing out of the NCAA Tournament without hardware, and should have the confidence to compete with any team in the country.
