No. 12 men’s basketball falls to Virginia Tech in double OT

Senior guard London Perrantes scored a game-high 22 points in the double overtime loss.

With just 3.1 seconds remaining in the second overtime period, Virginia Tech senior guard Seth Allen drove into the paint, making a layup to put the final touch on an 80-78 win over Virginia.

It’s a scene that will likely play over and over again in the nightmares of Cavalier fans. However, perhaps not as much as the last-second tip-in from junior guard Ty Outlaw at the end of regulation that pushed the game into overtime, or the layup from senior point guard London Perrantes that would have given Virginia the lead with 21.2 seconds left in the first overtime period, but somehow stalled at the rim.

Before the Cavaliers (18-6, 8-4 ACC) headed into the long overtime battle with the Hokies (17-7, 6-6 ACC), however, they squandered a 14-point halftime lead, as they entered the intermission leading 37-23. Much of that was due to Allen — who led Virginia Tech with 20 points — and junior guard Justin Bibbs, adding 16 points and six rebounds.

Despite Perrantes leading the team with 22 points, Virginia didn’t help themselves out with bonus points, as the Cavaliers made 14 of their 24 free throw attempts, resulting in a 58.3 percent free throw average. On the other hand, the Hokies made 20 of their 26 free throw opportunities.

With the loss, Virginia fell to 1-1 against Virginia Tech on the season. The game ushered flashbacks of last year’s 70-68 loss to the Hokies at Cassell Coliseum.

The Cavaliers have a quick turnaround, facing No. 18 Duke at John Paul Jones Arena Wednesday. Tipoff for the ACC tilt is set for 9 p.m.
