Although she scored 19 points, senior guard Breyana Mason could not help her team overcome Louisville.

The Virginia women’s basketball team (18-10, 7-8 ACC) dropped a tough road game to No. 14 Louisville Thursday, 55-66. The Cardinals (24-6, 11-4 ACC) snapped the Cavaliers’ three-game win streak while extending its own win streak to four.

Louisville came out strong on defense in the first half, limiting the Cavaliers to 18 points in the as both teams tried to find its scoring stroke. Virginia kept it close in a defense-heavy first quarter, but Louisville sophomore guard Asia Durr hit a jumper with four seconds left in the quarter to give the Cardinals an 11-8 lead that it would carry into the second quarter.

Louisville scored 18 points in the second quarter to take a commanding 29-18 lead at the half. Though Virginia got within three points in the third quarter, Louisville kept its foot on the gas and carried a seven-point lead into the final frame. Louisville scored 10 points early on in the fourth quarter and made key free throws in the waning minutes to pick up yet another ACC win.

Senior guard Breyana Mason led Virginia with 19 points — making 7-11 shots from the field. However, the other Cavaliers could do little against a tough Cardinal defense. Louisville limited the Cavaliers two hottest players — freshman guard Dominique Toussaint and sophomore guard J’Kyra Brown — to six and eight points, respectively. Durr scored 24 points for the Cardinals while junior forward Myisha Hines-Allen chipped in 21 points.

The Cavaliers face NC State at home Saturday in its final game of the regular season.
