Virginia traveled to Farmville, Va. to face Longwood in a non-conference doubleheader, where it lost both games by one run each.
In the first game, The Lancers (12-16, 1-2 Big South) pulled off the 1-0 victory in a tight game.
The Cavaliers (11-22, 2-10 ACC) put up a tremendous pitching effort, with sophomore Erica Osherow allowing just one run over the course of six innings and striking out two hitters. However, Longwood was still able to tally up a lone run in the second inning, which proved to be the difference. The Lancers also put up good pitching — retiring the first seven Virginia batters. Osherow was one of the mere three Cavaliers to get on base.
In the second game of the day, Longwood edged out the Cavaliers again by just one run.
Although Virginia got off to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning with junior pitcher and outfielder Allison Davis her fourth triple of the season and senior outfielder Iyana Hughes driving her in with an RBI single, the Lancers were quick to respond. In its first at bat of the game, Longwood hit a solo homerun to even things up.
With the game tied, a pitching showdown occurred between the teams. Sophomore Lexi Mettler retired 10-straight batters for the Cavaliers over the course of four innings. Meanwhile, senior Elizabeth McCarthy retired 14-consecutive batters, tallied up 11 strikeouts, only allowed four hits and did not walk a single batter for Longwood. In the top of the fifth inning, Longwood was able to crack Mettler’s stellar performance with a homerun and bring in the game-winning run.
The Cavaliers will continue their stretch of games on the road with a three-game conference series against North Carolina starting Friday.
