Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) declared a state of emergency for the Commonwealth on Monday due to the then-impending winter storm. In a release, McAuliffe warned Virginians to take precautions, especially in the northern part of the state.

The University cancelled classes until 9 a.m. Tuesday in response to response to overnight sleet and freezing rain in the Charlottesville area. The University also suspended SafeRide services for the early morning hours of Tuesday and closed Clemons and Brown libraries at midnight Monday evening.

The status changes were in light of an overestimated amount of snowfall. While other parts of the state — northern Virginia in particular — received up to eight inches of snow, Charlottesville saw minor inclement weather.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) declared a state of emergency for the Commonwealth on Monday due to the then-impending winter storm. In a release, McAuliffe warned Virginians to take precautions, especially in the northern part of the state.

The declaration authorized state agencies to mobilize resources and aid localities in responding to the winter weather.

Kathleen Jump, the project and communications manager at the University’s Office of Safety and Emergency Preparedness, said the governor’s decision is important in how it affects the precautions taken by the University.

“The governor’s declaration of a state of emergency is important because, among other things, it authorizes the state to identify and position resources where they are needed and allows state agencies to assist localities as they prepare and respond to an emergency,” Jump said in an email to The Cavalier Daily.

Jump said the University has asked for state resources during past states of emergency to cope with winter storms. With regard to this week’s winter weather, Jump said the University was insignificantly impacted by the weather conditions.

“Fortunately, the path of this storm combined with Charlottesville’s relatively warm ground temperatures made the impact of the storm negligible for us, and the University was able to resume normal operations at 9 a.m.,” Jump said.
