With the NCAA Championships kicking off this weekend from Thursday through Saturday, Virginia’s competing wrestlers are preparing for their last competitive bout of the season. The tournament will take place in St. Louis, Mo.
Virginia will have four wrestlers competing — freshman Jack Mueller, senior George DiCamillo, redshirt freshman Sam Krivus and junior Andrew Atkinson. Mueller will be the No. 10 seed in his weight class of 125 pounds, DiCamillo will be the No. 6 seed in his weight class of 141 pounds and Krivus and Atkinson will come into the tournament unranked.
In the first round, Mueller is set to take on Travis Piotrowski of Illinois, DiCamillo is set to take on the winner between Christopher Carton of Iowa and Joshua Heil of Campbell, Krivus will take on No. 15 seed Kenny Theobald of Rutgers and Atkinson will take on No. 10 seed Brian Murphy of Michigan.
Mueller, Dicamillo and Krivus will take on unfamiliar opponents, while Atkinson will rematch with Murphy. Atkinson won the last matchup in an upset 11-7 decision.
After a very strong freshman season with the Cavaliers, Jack Mueller hopes to cap it off by taking home some hardware at the NCAA Championships.
This will be DiCamillo’s last chance to compete in collegiate competition, and he hopes to place in the competition. Coming in as the No. 6 seed in his weight class ought to add some confidence, but after stepping on the mat in the NCAA Championships, rankings no longer matter.
Coach Steve Garland has been coaching up these players all season for a tournament like this. On the eve of the tournament, the only thing to do is trust the process and believe that all their training will pay off on the mat.
