Senior catcher Katie Park homered in Virginia's 10-4 win over North Carolina.

After getting swept in its past two conference series, Virginia ensured it wouldn’t happen again by opening up the series at North Carolina with a win.

The seniors for the Cavaliers (12-24, 3-12 ACC) were crucial in picking up the 10-4 win against the Tar Heels (29-9, 9-3 ACC), who had previously only dropped two ACC games.

Senior second baseman Madison Labshere, who went two-for-three with two RBIs, started the scoring for the Cavaliers with a home run in the third inning. Senior catcher Katie Park immediately followed with a home run of her own, making Virginia’s lead 3-0 in the top of the third. After the Tar Heels claimed the lead with a four-run rally, the Cavaliers responded with a two-run fourth inning, two more runs in the fifth inning and three runs in the sixth.

After Virginia’s victory in the first game, North Carolina dominated Saturday’s game with a 12-1 run-rule win.

The single run for the Cavaliers came from sophomore pitcher Erika Osherow, who recorded her first-career home run with a solo shot in the third inning. However, by the fourth inning the Tar Heels were out to a 4-1 lead and in the sixth inning, North Carolina’s offense sealed the deal by tallying eight runs.

In the deciding game of the series, the Tar Heels edged out the Cavaliers with a score of 8-7. Despite a 3-0 lead in the first inning and a 7-5 lead in the fourth inning, Virginia couldn’t hold off North Carolina. Virginia’s early lead came from a three-run home run from junior first baseman Danni Ingraham. After the Tar Heels took the lead, Park was able to get the Cavaliers back in front with an RBI single in the fourth — her 13th multi-hit game of the season. However, it was not enough to stop North Carolina from going ahead in the fifth inning to take the game.

Virginia heads back out on the road for a non-conference doubleheader against James Madison Tuesday and another doubleheader Wednesday at George Mason.
