Softball splits doubleheader against George Mason

After splitting a doubleheader against James Madison last night, the Virginia softball team produced had the same result in its doubleheader against George Mason.

In the first game of the night, the Cavaliers (14-26, 3-12 ACC) fell to the Patriots (10-23, 4-2 Atlantic 10).

George Mason jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning, and maintained the lead from there on. The Cavaliers first got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning after senior outfielder McKall Miller picked up an RBI to drive in senior third baseman Kaitlin Fitzgerald. Virginia picked up another run in the sixth inning off of an RBI single from senior outfielder Iyana Hughes. However, it was not enough to erase the damage the Patriots did in the first two innings, as the game finished with a final score of 6-2.

In the second game of the evening, while George Mason was able to get on the scoreboard first again, the Cavaliers were able to finish on top this time.

After the Patriots picked up a run in the first inning, Miller hit a solo homerun — marking her fifth of the season — in the second inning to tie things up at one apiece. Virginia got its first lead of the day in the fifth inning when Hughes and junior outfielder Allison Davis each hit RBI singles to make the game 3-2 in favor of the Cavaliers. Virginia picked up two more runs later in the inning, and then pushed the lead even more with RBI singles from Davis and senior catcher Katie Park in the sixth. The Cavaliers held onto the lead and picked up the 7-2 rebound win. Miller finished the game two-for-three to lead the Virginia offense to victory.

The Cavaliers have the weekend off and will face Liberty for an away game Tuesday and a home game Wednesday. Then, they will resume ACC action with a home series against Georgia Tech starting Friday, April 14.
