The Virginia men’s lacrosse team saw its season come to an end in disappointing fashion Saturday as it lost to Penn for the second time this season in a 17-11 affair. After losing to Penn (7-5, 3-3 Ivy) 11-10 in their first meeting earlier this season, Virginia (8-7, 0-4 ACC) was looking to change things this time around and end the regular season on a high note.

The Cavaliers hung in there through three quarters Saturday afternoon, only trailing 13-10 heading into the final frame. However, Penn used a strong offensive and defensive effort to pull away in the fourth quarter, outscoring Virginia 4-1 and nabbing the 17-11 victory. It looked as if Virginia was going to get ahead early on, but a 2-0 run was squashed by a subsequent 7-2 run by Penn to bring the score to 7-4 in Penn’s favor.

As halftime rolled around, the game remained tight with Penn holding on to a 10-8 lead. Out of halftime, both teams remained competitive with Virginia trailing 12-10 with just over six minutes to go in the third quarter. However, Penn pulled away, finishing the match on a 5-1 run and clinching the win.

Senior midfielder AJ Fish had a solid game, scoring two goals and notching two assists. Freshman midfielder Milan Murray also chipped in two goals in addition to an assist. In Coach Lars Tiffany’s first year on the job, Virginia improved its record from 7-8 to 8-7, but failed to pick up an ACC win.
