After an impressive display in the Cavalier Classic Tournament, Virginia (2-1) will travel to Boone, N.C this weekend to compete in the Appalachian Invitational Tournament.

Coach Aaron Smith’s debut started the Cavaliers on the right foot in the Cavalier Classic — sweeping Hofstra and winning big against Liberty before ultimately falling short in the fourth set against Villanova. Especially strong performers over the three matches were sophomore defensive specialist Kelsey Miller and sophomore right side hitter Jelena Novakovic — both of whom were selected to the All-Tournament team.

Ready to apply lessons learned last weekend, the Cavaliers will begin their tournament against ETSU (0-3) before continuing on against Towson (3-0) and Appalachian State (2-2).

Last weekend ETSU dropped two consecutive matches against Arizona and Wichita State at the LUV Invitational. Going up against two teams with a proven record of postseason success, ETSU was able to win a set against Arizona, but ultimately fell due to the Wildcats’ strong defense. Outclassed by Wichita State, ETSU lost in just three sets.

Towson began its season with an undefeated appearance at the Western Carolina Tournament last weekend. The Tigers easily handled all three opponents — sweeping Jacksonville State before dropping just one set each against Western Carolina and Charleston Southern.

Appalachian State competed in the Springhill Suites Mayfaire Invitational Tournament last weekend, losing 2-3 against Davidson before finding success against UNCW and Loyola. Having begun their season earlier with a tied exhibition match against South Carolina and a close loss against Missouri State, the Mountaineers have had more experience than other teams competing in the tournament.

Virginia begins the Appalachian Invitational against ETSU at 4 p.m. Friday in Boone N.C.
