Freshman midfielder Taryn Torres scored Virginia's lone goal in their win over Miami.

Although Virginia’s past two games ended in double-overtime, No. 11 Virginia (6-2-2, 1-0-1 ACC) needed only 90 minutes to beat Miami and pick up its first ACC win of the season.

“I thought we played a very good first half,” Coach Steve Swanson said. “We did a lot of good things. We found the space, and we had a number of good chances and a great goal.”

The Cavaliers took down the Hurricanes (4-3-0, 0-1-0 ACC) with a score of 1-0, marking the fifth clean sheet of the season for freshman goalkeeper Laurel Ivory and the Virginia backline.

“We kind of looked at two of their key players up top … And tried to shut down those players,” senior defender Megan Reid said. “They’re their main offense, so we were able to put a little more pressure on them which caused a little more turnovers and kept the ball in front of us and away from our goalkeeper.”

The Cavaliers continued their trend of outshooting their opponents, posting 23 shots while Miami only had two shots.

“It’s great that we’re getting chances,” freshman forward Taryn Torres said. “But we for sure just need to put those away because that’s going to make the difference in the game.”

Torres was the lone Cavalier to score a goal, picking up her third goal of the season when she headed in a cross from Reid. Torres is tied for the most goals on the team.

The Cavaliers stay in Charlottesville for another ACC matchup against No. 8 North Carolina Sunday. When the two teams met last year, one game resulted in a double-overtime tie and the other was a 3-0 victory for the Tar Heels (6-2-0, 2-0-0 ACC).

“UNC will be coming out a lot more aggressively than what we saw with Miami and what we saw this past weekend,” Reid said. “So, it’ll be hopefully a little more spaced out, so hopefully we’ll be able to knock the ball a little bit more through our midfield and through the center of the field.”

Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
