After two double-overtime matches last week, the Virginia women’s soccer team is back in action this week and will face ACC opponent Miami Thursday.
The overtime ties against NC State and East Carolina highlighted an ongoing struggle for No. 11 Virginia (5-2-2, 0-0-1 ACC) to finish its opportunities. Against the Wolfpack (7-1-1, 0-0-1 ACC), the Cavaliers took 20 shots while their opponents took just five. Similarly, the Cavaliers outshot the Pirates (5-2-2), 19-to-9.
Scoring the lone goal for Virginia this past week was sophomore forward Taylor Ziemer. Ziemer — who earlier in the season was named ACC co-offensive player of the week — is the leading scorer for the Cavaliers with three goals on the season.
Although Virginia has not scored as many goals as it would like, the Cavaliers did show they are capable of putting numbers on the scoreboard when they scored three goals against now No. 7 Penn State.
Meanwhile, Miami (4-2-0, 0-0 ACC), who has not played a match since Sept. 3, has won by margins of up to six points.
The leading scorer for the Hurricanes is senior forward Ronnie Johnson. Johnson, who was named to the All-ACC Academic team last year, has four goals and one assist on the season.
An additional big offensive weapon for Miami is sophomore midfielder Kristina Fisher, who has five assists this season. Fisher also scored the game-winning goal when the Hurricanes beat the Cavaliers 2-1 last season.
The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff Thursday night at Klöckner Stadium. After this match, the Cavaliers will remain in Charlottesville to play No. 8 North Carolina Sunday afternoon.
