The No. 18 Virginia baseball team won two of three games over the weekend at home against Eastern Kentucky . Though the Cavaliers (4-3) gave up three runs in the ninth inning to lose 7-6 on Friday, they won 12-3 and 13-1 on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, to take the series.
On Friday, Cavalier starter Daniel Lynch, a junior left-handed pitcher, went seven innings, surrendering only four runs on six hits. His teammate, freshman lefthander Andrew Abbott, pitched a 1-2-3 eighth. Two wild pitches and an error then set up Tyler Romanik’s game-winning single that scored Chris Botsoe for Eastern Kentucky (1-6).
Junior center fielder Jake McCarthy went 2-4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored on Friday. He and freshman right fielder Alex Tappen each drove in a run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Virginia a 6-4 lead.
Fifteen hits from the Cavalier offense helped defeat Eastern Kentucky 12-3 on Saturday. Senior right-handed pitcher Derek Casey struck out 12 batters in seven innings on the mound. Casey gave up five hits and three runs, only one of which was earned.
Senior second baseman Andy Weber went 3-5 on Saturday with two runs and a career-high five RBIs. Weber hit a three-run homer to right field in the sixth inning, his first of the season.
On Sunday, Virginia junior right-handed pitcher Evan Sperling pitched five scoreless innings, surrendering only one hit, en route to a 13-1 victory. Sperling has not yet given up a run this season in two starts.
McCarthy went 2-4 Sunday with two runs scored and two stolen bases, batting in the leadoff spot for Virginia.
The Cavaliers will play twice midweek — Tuesday against VMI, who defeated the Cavaliers 9-4 on Feb. 20, and Wednesday against William and Mary. Both games will begin at 3 p.m. at Davenport Field at Disharoon Park.
