Fresh off a dominant win at High Point, the No. 6 Virginia men’s lacrosse team is set to take on No. 18 Princeton Saturday at Klöckner Stadium in a clash that will renew an extensive rivalry between the two schools.
Their matchup Saturday will mark the 25th time the Tigers (1-0, 0-0 Ivy) and Cavaliers (3-0, 0-0 ACC) have faced off against each other, with Virginia leading the series 14-10. Some of these matchups, however, were heartbreakers for the Cavaliers, with Virginia losing to Princeton in the NCAA title game in both 1994 and 1996.
However, despite the extensive history between these two exceptional lacrosse programs, they haven’t met in 10 years of regular season play. The clash this weekend at Klöckner will reignite this historic rivalry.
Virginia comes into this game on a tear, after dismantling two-consecutive opponents on the road. The Cavaliers’ patented offense has unsurprisingly impressed, with standout freshman attacker Ian Laviano leading Virginia with nine goals. Their youthful, athletic attack, anchored by Laviano and sophomore attackman Michael Kraus, will be sure to excite against the Tigers.
Princeton, like Virginia, won a hard-fought contest to open their season, defeating Monmouth 9-8 in two overtimes at home. They also have two young standouts that the Cavaliers should worry about. Freshman midfielder Chris Brown, who led the Tigers with five points against Monmouth, and sophomore attacker Michael Sowers, who added three assists, are poised to give the Cavaliers fits defensively.
A classic lacrosse rivalry will be renewed Saturday as the Cavaliers look to get their fourth win in a tricky non-conference matchup. Faceoff starts at Klöckner at 1 p.m.
