The No. 24 Virginia baseball team was swept in a three-game road series this weekend at Miami.

The Virginia (13-10, 3-6 ACC) offense combined for three runs total over the three games. This was the first time the Hurricanes (12-11, 6-3 ACC) swept the Cavaliers since 2008.

Friday’s game went into extra innings, as senior right-handed starting pitcher Derek Casey and freshman left-handed relief pitcher Andrew Abbott combined to allow only two earned runs in 10 innings. Casey worked seven of those innings, earning six strikeouts and not walking a single batter.

However, freshman third baseman Raymond Gil drove in the winning run for Miami with a bases-loaded single to right field in the bottom of the 11th inning to win the game 3-2.

Junior first baseman Nate Eikhoff and freshman right fielder Alex Tappen had back-to-back two-out RBIs to tie the game for Virginia in the top of the sixth.

On Saturday, Virginia was shut out by Miami’s pitching, falling 1-0. Miami freshman right-handed pitcher Evan McKendry went seven innings, surrendering only three hits and striking out 12 Virginia hitters.

Junior left-handed starting pitcher Daniel Lynch, threw for seven innings as well, with 11 strikeouts. The only run scored off Lynch came in the bottom of the second inning on a triple to left center by Miami junior third baseman Romy Gonzalez.

Eikhoff’s 16-game hitting streak came to an end on Saturday. Prior to that game, he had reached base in all 21 games this season.

The Cavaliers lost 8-1 in Sunday’s series finale. Virginia’s only run came on a sacrifice fly by Tappen in the fourth inning. Sophomore center fielder Cayman Richardson recorded three of Virginia’s six hits on Sunday. Senior designated hitter Caleb Knight was hit by three pitches in that game, tying a school record.

The Cavaliers next play at home on Tuesday against Longwood. The game will begin at 4:00 p.m. at Davenport Field at Disharoon Park.
