Both University and Charlottesville emergency services responded to the fire alarms last Wednesday.

The cause of a small brush fire that blazed on Grounds on April 4 remains unknown, following the release of an incident report Tuesday from the Charlottesville Fire Department.

Emergency officials from both the University Police Department and the Charlottesville Fire Department responded to the brush fire, located near Kerchof Hall, at about 4:45 p.m. April 4. Students and faculty in Rouss-Robertson Hall and Old Cabell Hall were evacuated in response to the fire, and the Emmet Street and Stadium Road intersection was closed as emergency crews responded.

Deputy University Spokesperson Wesley Hester said in an email to The Cavalier Daily that evacuations in some nearby buildings were the result of fire alarms being set off, either manually or automatically by smoke in the area.

“A few buildings in the area had the smoke alarms activated by either traces of smoke or from individuals pulling the fire alarms, which resulted in people inside evacuating the buildings,” Hester said.

Hester also stated that the only damage caused by the fire was to several shrubs and one tree. No individuals were injured as a result of the fire.

The incident report for the fire was released Tuesday afternoon, and describes the scene as a “fast moving fire towards U.Va. buildings on the hill” and producing “a significant amount of smoke.” Two fire engines and one fire truck were dispatched to put out the fire, which affected an approximately 300 square foot area.

According to the incident report, the cause of the fire remains unknown.
