The Virginia baseball team (0-3, 0-0 ACC) lost all three games played at the MLB4 Collegiate Baseball Tournament in Scottsdale, Ariz., over the weekend. The Cavaliers fell to No. 2 Vanderbilt, No. 17 Texas Christian and No. 24 California State-Fullerton.
Vanderbilt won 15-9 against Virginia Friday night, scoring eight runs in the top of the fourth inning to defeat the Cavaliers. Freshman third baseman Zack Gelof, batting in the leadoff spot for his first collegiate game, went 4-5 with 4 runs batted in.
Sophomore designated hitter Brendan Rivoli and senior first baseman Nate Eikhoff each chipped in two hits for the Cavaliers.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Griff McGarry started the season opener on the mound for Virginia. McGarry went 3 innings, giving up five runs, all earned. Senior right-handed pitcher Chesdin Harrington came in to relieve him in the fourth but gave up eight runs in two-thirds of an inning.
Saturday night, the Cavaliers went behind 7-0 in the fourth inning against Texas Christian en route to a 9-4 loss. Virginia starting pitcher Mike Vasil, a freshman right-hander making his collegiate debut, went three and two-thirds innings, surrendering five runs. Junior right-handed pitcher Paul Kosanovich gave up four runs in four and one-third innings of relief.
Rivoli had a hit and two runs batted in, while senior center fielder Cameron Simmons and sophomore shortstop Tanner Morris each recorded two hits.
The Cavaliers opened the game against California State-Fullerton Sunday night with a 4-0 lead through 4 innings, as Morris went 3-5 with a run and an RBI. Rivoli also added two hits for Virginia. Junior right-handed pitcher Noah Murdock started the game and went 6 innings.
Virginia led 5-3 going into the ninth inning. However, sophomore left-handed pitcher Andrew Abbott, in his second inning of relief, then gave up three runs as the Cavaliers fell 6-5.
Virginia’s next game is their home opener, Wednesday at 3 p.m. against VMI at Disharoon Park.
