Sophomore left fielder Brendan Rivoli hit two home runs in Virginia's weekend series at Georgia Tech.

The Virginia baseball team (9-10, 2-4 ACC) lost two games of a three-game series at Georgia Tech (13-7, 3-3 ACC) over the weekend. The Cavaliers won the first game of the series but dropped the final two.

Game 1: Virginia - 9, Georgia Tech - 8

Virginia scored three runs in the ninth inning to claim the series opener.

Sophomore left fielder Brendan Rivoli went four-for-five with a home run on the day, driving in three runs and scoring two more, while senior center fielder Cameron Simmons went three-for-four with the game-winning RBI.

Georgia Tech led 8-6 heading into the top of the ninth, but five straight Virginia batters reached base. Sophomore shortstop Tanner Morris drove in freshman second baseman Nic Kent with a double, then Rivoli hit a single to drive in freshman third baseman Zack Gelof. Simmons then hit a sacrifice fly to score Morris and give the Cavaliers the lead.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Devin Ortiz was credited with his first win of the season in relief after getting the last out of the eighth. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Kyle Whitten pitched the ninth and earned the save.

Game 2: Georgia Tech - 7, Virginia - 3

Georgia Tech got out to an early lead, scoring three runs off sophomore right-handed pitcher Griff McGarry in the second inning and another in the fourth before McGarry left the game.

Simmons scored for Virginia in the sixth on an RBI groundout by sophomore right fielder Alex Tappen, making the score 4-1 in favor of the Yellow Jackets. However, Georgia Tech scored three more runs in their half of the frame.

In the eighth, Simmons hit his third home run of the season, a solo shot to right center. Simmons and Gelof were the only Cavaliers with multiple hits, notching two apiece. Virginia added another run in the ninth, but Georgia Tech held on to win 7-3.

Game 3: Georgia Tech - 6, Virginia - 5

The Yellow Jackets scored two runs off Virginia freshman right-handed pitcher Mike Vasil in the first inning to go ahead 2-0.

Junior catcher Logan Michaels drove in Rivoli with a single in the top of the second, but Georgia Tech scored two more runs off of Vasil in the bottom of the inning. The Yellow Jackets added one more run each in the fifth and seventh innings, making the score 6-1.

Rivoli hit a three-run homer in the top of the eighth, his second of the weekend, and Kent scored on a double play in the ninth to bring Virginia to within a run, but the Cavalier comeback fell short with a final score of 6-5.

Virginia next plays at home Wednesday against Connecticut at Disharoon Park. First pitch will be at 4 p.m.
