The Virginia baseball team (5-5, 0-0 ACC) split a doubleheader with Seton Hall (1-6, 0-0 Big East) Saturday at Disharoon Park. The two teams were initially supposed to play a three-game series Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but inclement weather forced the first game to be rescheduled to Saturday and the final game to be cancelled.
Game 1: Seton Hall 3, Virginia 0
Seton Hall junior right-handed pitcher Noah Thompson started on the mound and pitched 8.1 innings, giving up only two hits. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Ryan McLinskey came in to relieve him and gave up a hit in a third of an inning, then junior left-handed pitcher Corey Sawyer finished the game for the Pirates.
The Cavaliers were behind 1-0 after the first inning, then gave up two more runs in the fourth for the final score of 3-0. Junior right-handed pitcher Noah Murdock, Virginia’s starting pitcher, pitched seven innings and allowed only seven hits.
Freshman third baseman Zack Gelof, sophomore shortstop Tanner Morris and senior outfielder Cameron Simmons had the only hits for the Cavaliers.
Game 2: Virginia 4, Seton Hall 0
The Cavaliers shutout Seton Hall in the second game of the doubleheader behind six innings of three-hit baseball from starting sophomore right-handed pitcher Griff McGarry, who struck out eight Seton Hall batters.
In the first inning, Morris hit an RBI double to drive in Gelof and put Virginia ahead 1-0. Sophomore right fielder Devin Ortiz hit the first home run of his Cavalier career in the bottom of the second, doubling the Virginia lead.
Virginia scored two more runs in the second on RBI singles from sophomore designated hitter Brendan Rivoli and junior left fielder Cayman Richardson.
