Love died after physical confrontation, affidavit shows

Fourth-year College student George Huguely - who was charged with first-degree murder in connection to the death of fourth-year College student Yeardley Love yesterday - admitted to police officials that "he shook Love and her head repeatedly hit the wall" during an altercation, according to an affidavit for a search warrant. Huguely, a former member of the men's lacrosse team, also admitted that he broke into Love's bedroom by kicking his right foot through the door.

City cannot enforce snow removal fines

A local judge ruled last week that the City of Charlottesville does not have the legal authority to enforce a local ordinance that brings criminal charges against parties for not clearing their sidewalks of snow immediately, according to state code. After this winter's barrage of snow storms in the area - which ultimately cost the University $1 million in dealing with the aftermath - some local residents and businesses had been facing fines for not shoveling their sidewalks within 12 hours after the snow ceased falling, City spokesperson Ric Barrick said.

Search for Harrington continues

Months have passed since Virginia Tech student Morgan Dana Harrington's disappearance Oct. 17, but state police continue to stress that the investigation is still active and that anyone with relevant information should not hesitate to contact them. "There are about 600 leads at this time, but unfortunately nothing has been able to get us beyond knowing that her last sighting was at 9:30 p.m.

Students, faculty initiate Haiti relief

As Haiti copes with the strongest aftershock since last week's destructive 7.0 earthquake, former and current members of the University and Charlottesville communities have continued their efforts to aid the devastated nation. Friends of deceased Batten student and College alumna Stephanie Jean-Charles confronted their personal loss at a vigil Sunday night, where they shared memories of their friend and erected a shrine in her honor in front of the French house, where Jean-Charles used to live, fourth-year College student Frederika Braun said.

Faculty approves MESALC master

The University's Faculty Senate voted unanimously Friday to support the Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Languages and Culture's proposal to create its first master's degree program.

Students create new science publication

A group of University Engineering students is working to launch an undergraduate research journal titled The Spectra Engineering and Science Research Journal. "Our goal for the journal is to increase the exposure of engineering research, applied science research and engineering design," said Chris Belyea, a fourth-year Engineering student and The Spectra's founder and editor-in-chief.

Academic engagement on the rise, survey indicates

Results from the National Survey of Student Engagement, released Monday, reveal that more than 41 percent of higher education institutions surveyed showed some level of improvement in at least one area of student engagement since the last survey period. This year, about 400 colleges and universities participated, said Jillian Kinzie, associate director at the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research, which conducts the survey annually.

McDonnell wins election by landslide

Faculty discuss authors

At its working meeting yesterday, the Faculty Senate discussed the draft resolution on scholarly publication and authors' rights, as well as changes to University employee health insurance plans. "I want everyone to be as informed as possible," Senate Chair Ann Hamric said in regards to the Senate's copyright resolution, which proposes a requirement that all faculty should retain the appropriate rights to have their articles stored in a public University repository.
