Weekend Previews: Nov. 8-10

Wrestling

What: Hokie Dual matches: No. 14 Virginia (3-0) vs. Virginia Military Institute (0-0), No. 20 Wisconsin (0-0) and Kent State (0-0)
Where: Salem, Va.
When: Sunday 9 a.m. (Keydets), 11 a.m. (Badgers), 1 p.m. (Golden Flashes)
The Skinny: The Virginia wrestlers will head south to Salem, Va. Saturday to participate in the Hokie Duals, with matchups against Virginia Military Institute, No. 20 Wisconsin and Kent State. The Cavaliers will look to build off their dominating performance from last weekend at the Virginia Quad Meet, which featured victories against Division II Anderson, Gardner-Webb and West Virginia by a combined score of 130-9.

The Keydets are untested in dual meets this season, but they did participate in the Clarion Open last Sunday where they collected 11 wins. No. 20 Wisconsin will open its season with two dual meet matchups Friday against Cumberland and Chattanooga before competition Sunday. The Hokie Duals will be Kent State’s first competition of the season.

The Cavaliers are led by junior Nick Sulzer, the lone All-American returning to the team after he finished eighth at the NCAA Championships at the 165 pound weight class. Despite having only one returning All-American, the Cavaliers have depth across the board, with five of nine NCAA qualifiers returning this season, and 19 different grapplers seeing action at the 10 different weight classes last weekend.

Volleyball

What: Virginia (14-10, 7-5 ACC) vs. No. 18 Florida State (17-6, 10-2 ACC), Miami (15-7, 8-4 ACC)
Where: Memorial Gymnasium
When: Friday, 7 p.m. (Seminoles); Saturday 7 p.m. (Hurricanes)
The Skinny: Virginia is currently riding a four-game winning streak that has vaulted the team into sixth place in the ACC standings. After being swept for two consecutives games at home three weeks ago, the Cavaliers rebounded with a win against rival Virginia Tech to spark the streak.

The next two games will present formidable challenges for the Cavaliers, beginning with a matchup against No. 18 Florida State Friday. The Seminoles are second in the ACC and have won their past three games, including victories against No. 19 North Carolina and NC State — teams sitting in third and fourth place in the ACC, respectively.

Just 24 hours later, Virginia must turn its attention to Miami, who also defeated North Carolina and NC State in its past two games. The Hurricanes have struggled away from home this season, however, having lost their last four road games. Miami is one game ahead of Virginia in the ACC standings. Just two games separate fourth and ninth place in the conference, giving each game added importance down the stretch.

The Cavaliers have seized momentum during this recent stretch and are above .500 in ACC play for the first time since 2009. Unfortunately, Virginia has not beaten Florida State or Miami since 2010, with four consecutive losses to each school. To avoid the same fate this weekend, the Cavaliers will need strong performances from outside hitters freshman Haley Kole and junior Tori Janowski, two of the team’s leaders in kills.

Swimming and Diving

What: Virginia vs. Texas, Penn State, and West Virginia
Where: Aquatic Fitness Center
When: Friday, 6 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m.
The Skinny: Virginia will host its first home meet of the season this weekend in what will also be coach Augie Busch’s first career home meet in Charlottesville. The No. 9 men will face No. 1 Texas, No. 24 Penn State and West Virginia while the No. 11 women will be challenged by No. 9 Texas, No. 24 Penn State and West Virginia.

Two weekends ago in their first meet of the season, the Cavalier men defeated Navy 212-88 in Annapolis, Md. They won 14 of the meet’s 16 events and were led by senior Parker Camp, who won the 200 free and the 100 and 200 fly, and sophomore Luke Papendick, who swept the backstroke discipline.

The men’s team will face a stiff challenge in its first home meet in the top-ranked Longhorns. Texas won its 17th consecutive Big-12 championship last season in addition to ending the season as the No. 5 team in the country.

At the Navy meet, the Cavalier women defeated Navy 250-50 and Yale 237-63. The team was led by freshman Leah Smith and 2013 ACC Freshman of the Year Courtney Bartholomew en route to winning all 16 events.

Friday and Saturday will mark Virginia’s last home meet until early February when the Cavaliers face Pittsburgh.
