Smith wins ACC Swimmer of the Week

Freshman honored by conference for impressive weekend performances

Adding to her already record-setting first year, Leah Smith was awarded ACC Female Swimmer of the Week honors Tuesday for her performance against Virginia Tech, Wisconsin and Miami last weekend in Christiansburg, V.A. Smith helped propel the lady Cavaliers to victories in each of their three dual meets.

Smith won three individual events at the meet. On Friday, she paced the competition in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 16:17.84, coming in more than 37 seconds faster than second place teammate, sophomore Hanne Borgersen. Smith also came away victorious Saturday morning, winning the 200 and 500 freestyle with relative ease.

In addition, Smith was part of two successful relay teams. She was the first leg of the first place 800 freestyle relay team consisting of fellow freshman Kaitlyn Jones and seniors Caroline Kenney and Rachael Naurath. Smith was also the first leg of the second place 400 freestyle relay team that was narrowly edged by Wisconsin.

On the season, Smith, known for her excellence in the distance freestyle events, has already set the Virginia school record for the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:36.19. She also holds the second fastest time in school history for the 1000 and 1,650 yard freestyle events at 9:39.36 and 15:57.44, respectively.

Smith is the second Cavalier to win ACC Female Swimmer of the Week — sophomore Courtney Bartholomew won the award for her performance in the Ohio State Invitational in November. The Cavaliers will face Duke and heated rival North Carolina this weekend, swimming against the Blue Devils Friday in Durham, N.C. and against the Tar Heels Saturday in Chapel Hill, N.C.
