Virginia dominates Duke, splits North Carolina meet

Cavaliers nearly sweep rivalry weekend, men fall just short of upset in Chapel Hill

While the annual North Carolina matchup receives the most hype of any meet for the Cavaliers, Virginia first had to take care of business against Duke Friday and then go head-to-head against the rival Tar Heels. They did so with relative ease, as the No. 9 Virginia women were victorious against Duke, 187.5-98.5, while No. 20 Virginia men defeated the Blue Devils, 178-119.

Virginia won 23 of the meet’s 32 events, with 19 different swimmers winning their individual events. The men were led by senior Parker Camp, who won the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard butterfly. Virginia had eight other male swimmers win events.

On the women’s side, freshman Laura Simon won the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, while nine other swimmers won their individual events. Coach Augie Busch was even able to rest some of his stars, including freshman Leah Smith, who did not participate in any distance freestyle events, and sophomore Courtney Bartholomew, who sat out all her usual individual backstroke events.

Saturday’s North Carolina meet in Chapel Hill provided all the drama — and then some — that was lacking Friday. Heading into the final two events, the women of Virginia and No. 7 North Carolina were tied at 131. Virginia then gained victories in the 200-yard individual medley and the 400-yard freestyle relay to upset the Tar Heels, 152-146.

Similarly, the men of Virginia and No. 16 North Carolina were tied at 141 heading into the meet’s final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. Unfortunately, the men could not duplicate the women’s results, finishing second to the Tar Heels in the event, falling 154-145.

Virginia dominated the backstroke events, with Bartholomew and Luke Papendick winning both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke for the women and men, respectively. Other notable performances included Simon, who won the women’s 100 and 200-yard breaststroke, junior Ellen Williamson, who won both the women’s 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley, senior Brad Phillips who took first in the men’s 500 and 1,000-yard freestyle and junior diver JB Kolod, who broke his own school record on the men’s 1-meter diving with a score of 386.48.

Virginia will travel to Raleigh, N.C. next Saturday to face North Carolina State at 3 p.m.
