Virginia, seniors dominate Pitt

Cavaliers crush Pitt on Senior Day in final dual meet of the season

Virginia sent its 20 seniors off with a bang Saturday as the Cavaliers, in front of their home crowd for the first time in three months, dominated the visiting Panthers. The No. 7 Virginia women’s swim team defeated Pittsburgh, 189-103, while the No. 20 Virginia men’s team also secured the win, 179-112. Virginia gained victories in 31 of the meet’s 32 events, making it the program’s most dominant win of the ACC season.

At the meet, several University and Aquatic and Fitness Center pool records were broken. The first record to fall was in the fourth event — the men’s three meter diving — where junior JB Kolod earned a score of 428.10, breaking his previous school record of 424.85.

Freshman Leah Smith broke the school and AFC record on the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:33.29, the fastest national time in the event this season by more than three seconds. Additionally, fellow freshman Laura Simon broke the AFC record on the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:12.63.

Eight different Cavaliers won multiple events, while 11 others added individual event wins. Virginia was victorious in all four relay events — the men’s and women’s 200-yard medley relay and the men’s and women’s 200-yard freestyle relay.

Senior Parker Camp was the only senior to win multiple individual events, claiming the 200-yard butterfly and the 100-yard individual medley titles. The other senior event winners were Jan Daniec, in the men’s 1,000-yard freestyle, and Emily Lloyd, in the women’s 100-yard freestyle.

The Virginia women finished the season with an 11-1 record in dual-meets, while the Virginia men broke .500 to finish 6-5 in dual-meets. Virginia will host the Cavalier Invitational next weekend in its final competition before the ACC Championships.
